Betty Comden and Adolph Green got it right: When you are infatuated the world is hazy and all out of focus, and you’re so bewitched you can barely walk.

Leonard Bernstein did his part, too. The strings of triplets keep pulling the tune off the straight and narrow. The effect is a little crazy and breathless, just like being in love.

“Lenny” is best remembered these days as a conductor, champion and composer of classical music, but he was a jazz baby at heart. He had his own jazz band as a teenager and one of his first jobs after college was transcribing Coleman Hawkins’s saxophone solos for a music publisher.

You can’t get much jazzier than that.
