When a love affair enters a downward spiral you may end up making all sorts of compromises, including tolerating being lied to. You may even ask for it.

This song is from “Foxy,” a musical version of Ben Jonson’s “Volpone” starring cowardly lion, Bert Lahr, in a Tony-winning performance. The music is by Robert Dolan, who had a long Hollywood career composing, music directing and producing (“White Christmas”).

The show got decent reviews but only ran 72 performances, probably because producer David Merrick stopped advertising after the first week and didn’t push RCA to make a cast recording.

You can almost forgive Merrick’s lack of support for the show once you know that “Foxy” wasn’t the only Broadway show he was producing that year. A month earlier he had opened a little show called “Hello Dolly.”
